IOS Chennai Chapter organises lecture on “Political Representation of Indian Muslims: A Contemporary Study with reference to Tamil Nadu

Chennai: The Chennai Chapter of the Institute of Objective Studies (IOS) organised a special lecture on "Political Representation of Indian Muslims: A Contemporary Study with Special Reference to Tamil Nadu" on Saturday, 11 July 2026, at 4.30 p.m.

The programme commenced with the recitation of a Qur’anic verse by Maulana Zafarullah Rahmni. Mr. Mohamed Haneef Katib, Co-ordinator of the IOS Chennai Chapter, welcomed the guest and the audience. He introduced the speaker and highlighted the activities and objectives of the Institute of Objective Studies.

The lecture was delivered by Dr. Inamul Hasan, an Indian political activist and National General Secretary of the Rajiv Gandhi Panchayati Raj Sangathan. Speaking on the theme, Dr. Hasan examined the state of Muslim political representation in India, with particular reference to Tamil Nadu, from the perspective of constitutional ideals of political justice and democratic inclusion.

In his address, he traced the evolution of Muslim representation in legislative bodies, highlighted recent improvements in electoral participation and power-sharing, and discussed the role of Dravidian politics in fostering inclusive governance. He also identified several key challenges, including equitable distribution of electoral tickets, the implications of delimitation, and the growing influence of social media on political discourse. He concluded by emphasising the need for stronger democratic participation, broader political alliances, and sustained advocacy for the political rights of Muslims while engaging constructively with wider societal concerns.

The lecture was followed by a lively interactive session in which participants discussed the challenges and opportunities before the present Tamil Nadu Government, led by Chief Minister Joseph Vijay, which was recently voted to power in the state elections.

The programme concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Mr. Ibnu Soud.
